How did you cope/manage completing the three days of “Life of a Teacher”?
The first day was slightly hectic, in first block as the students just started on new units. The lesson were conducted in a timely fashion and were not difficult to properly deliver. The second and third days in second block were fantastic. Was setup exactly as I wanted it to be and I successfully gave all lesson to the learners without any significant hurdles. I believe I coped adequately and was able to fully embrace being a natural science and technology teacher for three days.
How did you feel taking on all the responsibilities of a teacher in Block 1 compared to Block 2?
In block one I was slightly less confident as it was my first week with a new mentor. After his feedback though had much more confidence in myself and my ability to teach the required subject topics. In block two it was much easier as I found myself able to more easily command the classroom in my own style and methods that I devised.
Which activities did you find most challenging? How did you overcome these challenges?
The teaching of one-point perspective was tricky to teach the learners so with in each tech lesson o had the slides break the concept down step by step so the learners could see how it works Many learners made the mistakes of working in reverse. I made adjustments so that the learners could see in a video how to do it and that seemed to alleviate the problem slightly in the next class. Likely due to the addition of extra reinforcement.
Analyse your results of your self- evaluation survey where would you rate yourself higher?
I would keep my scores more or less the same as I believe it is my view that I am new and have lots to learn which assisted my improvement over these two blocks. The concept of lifelong learning and avoiding giving the same lesson over and over is really powerful and allows my creativity to thrive. I think I developed more in terms of classroom management along with literacy, numeracy and ICT skills.
Justify how you have improved these competencies through this experience
My abilities to reflect improved as I was able to impartially look at a lesson and improve on it within a day which led to greater success within my classroom. My work ethic and conduct have always been a core tenet of my identity and I have not deviated from that. Assessments created were both fair and showed that over the two days I had no major behavioural problems or disruptions. I am also able to more confidently project my voice and don’t feel as if I lose control of the class.
Look at the exit level outcomes and the final comments of your mentor teacher in your School Assessment Log & Report. Compare this to the initial self -evaluation you had completed at the beginning of your teaching experience
Compared to my mentor teacher’s rating I was apparently extremely modest. After conducting 11 lessons for him over the TE and assisting where I could he rated me at full marks. He says the way I conduct myself and manage a class is proficient and professional.
